Speech 2: Brain-Inspired Computing

Speaker

Prof. Valentina E. Balas (Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad, Romania)

Abstract

In this presentation we give an introduction on understanding the functioning of biological/neural structures. In our world there are two major challenges of the semiconductor industry, namely: power consumption and reliability of integrated circuits. To address these two challenges, we need to study the biological/neuronal model that will be used in designing the integrated circuits of the future because the power consumed by biological/neural structures to perform complex calculations is extremely low. The reliability of the biological/neural structures is incomparably higher than that of the current integrated circuits. We will analyze the gated ion channels which represents the nano-switches of the brain. Also we will identify new computational models that allow for the most accurate estimation of both the power consumption and the reliability of the biological/neural structures. We will deal with reliability schemes and in particular with hammock networks. Designing and simulating circuits, incorporating new computational will provide the semiconductor industry with good solutions for future technologies.
